Saturday Spotlight - Connections Music Therapy

Saturday Spotlight

Connections Music Therapy

1. What is the name of your shop or business and what do you offer/sell?
The name of my business is Connections Music Therapy (CMT). I offer in home music therapy services and provide both individual and group sessions. CMT specializes in congenital and acquired cognitive, physical, and mental disorders/disabilities. My current client age range is 4-26 with the majority of my clients having developmental disabilities or emotional/behavioural issues.

2. Where are you located? or where do you travel?
CMT is located in Ingersoll and provides services to London, Woodstock, and surrounding areas. Currently, half of my clients are in London, while the other half reside in Oxford County.

3. Do you have your own website/store or online link?
CMT can be found online at www.connectionsmusictherapy.com and
can also be found

4. How long have you been in business and how did you get started?
I have worked as a contract music therapist since 2013. The idea for CMT began in the summer of 2015, when I realized the need for in home therapy services in Oxford county, a rural community that does not have anything of this nature. By fall 2015 it was officially a business, with CMT having 3 clients. Currently, CMT has 20 clients and continues to grow. I am currently in the process of obtaining my Registered Psychotherapist designation, which will continue to open doors for more clients.

5. Who or what inspires you in your creativity?
My client inspire my creativity every day. Whether it is finding a new way to teach a skill, learning new songs or genres of music, or learning new ways to make interventions fun. Everyone is different, so I am constantly adapting what I do to meet the individual where they are.

6. Do you listen to music when you work, and if so what kind?
Occasionally a client may request to listen to a favourite song or a recorded track may be used for relaxation, but typically all of the music we engage in is live on guitar. Piano is also incorporated at times.

7. What do you like least/most about your business?
This was a tough question as I really had to stop and think if there’s anything I like least about my business. The answer is, there’s nothing I like least. I love every aspect of what I do, the families I engage with, the clients I work with, and the joys of being an entrepreneur. This has been the best career decision I could have made. Regardless of the type of day I’m having, going to work makes my day infinitely better. I find it’s not often when you are having a down or rough day that work makes it better, but it truly is the case for me. What I enjoy most about my business is seeing the smiles on my clients’ faces, seeing the smiles on parent’s faces, and watching everyone grow in their own way, whether that is learning a new skill, or something as simple as making eye contact. The client featured in this picture is Alex. I have been working with him for approximately five and a half months. When I began working with him, he would not make eye contact with me whatsoever. Now, all of our session include moments like this.

8. Describe your workspace?
I provide in home services to my clients, meaning I go to their homes with my instruments. I also have a school contract in which I go to an elementary school. Each space is different, but going to clients’ homes allows for less anxiety on their part, as they are in a comfortable, familiar place. As the majority of my clients have some degree of anxiety, this is a key aspect to success. Once the client is comfortable with the session, we may move the location, such as with Alex, who now attends a studio space where he can explore more instruments. When I am not facilitating sessions, but instead completing paperwork or creating new interventions I work from my home office.

9. What is one of your best moments in your business so far?
I am very grateful that I have had many fantastic moments in my business so far, from receiving two government grants, to partnering with the local Kiwanis club, and having large, well known organizations reach out to me inquiring about contracts.
One of the absolute best moments thus far though would have to be a comment from a client’s mother as they were being interviewed about music therapy for a magazine article CMT was featured in. This client had tried numerous types of therapy, including cognitive behavioural therapy, art therapy, play therapy, and counselling, none of which were successful. However, they said after meeting me the first day, the client commented that I would be the one to help her, and since then her mother has commented that she has her daughter back - she’s joyful, laughing, and their relationship has bettered as well. Hearing that music therapy could have such a strong impact so quick was very humbling for me and confirmed that this is what I was meant to do.

10. What advice would you give to anyone thinking about starting their own business?
If someone was thinking about starting their own business the best advice I would give is to go for it! Do not wait for the right time, do not wait for later or tomorrow. Take charge and make your dreams a reality. It may be scary, and it may require a lot of work, but if it’s something you’re passionate about it will be well worth it. Local small business centres are a fantastic resource to use and very helpful if you are unsure what to do. But don’t wait, because you never know what you could be missing out on.

I also sell kits to make wool dryer balls and hand felted soaps.

We sell alpacas too!

We offer workshops on making wool dryer balls, felting soap and dyeing yarn.  Keep an eye on our website and fb page for upcoming workshops.

2.     Where are you located? or where do you sell?
21370 Fairview Rd. Thorndale
Our farm store is open by appointment. Just call or email to arrange a farm visit.

I attend several events in the fall, leading up to Christmas, where I show and sell my products.
I also have “Chirstmas Shopping Days” at our farm at the end of November and beginning of December.
It is a great opportunity for folks to Christmas shop for warm and comfy, locally produced alpaca products
Dates of off farm events and our Christmas Shopping days will be posted on our website and fb page.

3.     Do you have your own website/store or online link?
Farm store open by appointment
Website:  www.zalpacas.com

4.     How long have you been doing your craft/art and how did you get started?
We have had our farm at Thorndale for 31 years. For the first several years we raised Standardbred horses and then transitioned into alpacas 9 years ago.
I already had an interest in spinning, weaving and knitting and chose alpacas because I knew that they had exquisite fibre that I could make into gorgeous yarn. They were also beautiful animals and smaller and easier to care for than horses.

5.     Who or what inspires you to create?
My alpaca yarn inspires me. The animals produce so many beautiful natural colours. Every year my yarn lots are somewhat different and jump start my imagination and creativity.
I am always looking about in the world and on the internet for new and unique uses for my alpaca fibre.

6.     Do you listen to music when you work, and if so what kind?
Music isn’t a big part of my creative process. Often I enjoy peace and quiet as I work.

7.     What do you like least/most about your craft?
The thing I like least is the vegetation that the alpacas collect in their fibre – from their food and bedding. It is a lot of work to get it out and it is never, ever all gone! I try to view the presence of the vegetation as a sure sign that these are natural products.

8.     Describe your workspace?
I don’t have a workshop, or studio. I just work at my kitchen table.
When I dye yarn, I do it in our garage.

9.     What is one of your best moments as a crafter/artist?
When someone buys some of my yarn or a knitted article and I see that they truly appreciate the fibre journey from the daily care of the animal, to shearing, sorting, processing and then to the beautiful yarn or final creation.

10.  What advice would you give to anyone thinking about starting their own craft business?
Follow your passion!
If you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life.

Thank you Debbie!

Feature Friday - Handmade Loom Hooks!

Feature Friday - Handmade Loom Hooks!

Do your plastic loom hooks break?

Try a handmade bamboo handle loom hook!

Is your loom hook uncomfortable?

Try a handmade bamboo handle loom hook!

We make these loom hooks with bamboo grown in our own garden.

(If you're looking for a corking set aka a Knitting Nancy seen in the above photo, click here)

The shaft for the metal hook goes the full length of the loom hook so the handle won't break off in the middle of a project.

Handles currently come in 3 sizes:
Small - 5 mm
Regular - 7 mm
Large - 9 mm

And the bamboo in the garden right now looks like we'll have some even larger handles for those who are looking for that.

Here is just one of the many feedback we've received!

Thanks so much to our happy customers!

Tutorial - Maternity Girl Guide Leader Uniform Blouse

Tutorial:

Maternity Girl Guide Leader Uniform Blouse

We have a Leader who is wants to be in uniform while she is expecting.

In the past, I have altered the striped uniform Alfred Sung design shirt for a mom-to-be and it was successful.  All I needed was the extra matching fabric to insert into the top and I got that from another shirt or a skirt - I forget which.

This time, we want to alter the blue button front blouse that is part of the current (2016) uniform for Girl Guides of Canada.

I envisioned an easy alteration of opening the seams along the sides and adding an insert.

It was almost that easy.
And I started and finished in just a few hours - and that includes carefully ripping out seams.

We had a second blouse that was long sleeved and I was thrilled to find that I would only need to cut off the long sleeves for the inserts.
Then I was able to finish that second blouse off as a newly short-sleeved version.

The second blouse was slightly faded due to washing and wearing so the insert is not quite the same colour as the new blouse, but it's close enough for us.

So, lets get to it!

First we marked where we wanted the insert to start.

Next, carefully rip out those seams.
I didn't initially rip out the little hemmed tabs but had to later.

Next, on the second blouse, cut off the fabric you'll need for the inserts.
We used the sleeves from a long-sleeved blouse.

Cut 2 pieces approximately the shape below.
Be sure it's long enough for the insert you need.

I hemmed the insert pieces before sewing them in.
Then I sewed the "side"seams.
This shows the 2 sides of the insert attached with the top part too big for the point.
That's okay.

Here is a close up of the top part that is too big.
We'll get back to that.

You need to make sure the original side seam is reinforced where you ripped up to.
So I sewed this seam and went down about a half inch into the new insert part.

Here I am sewing it.

By the way, I was pretty excited to find that I had the exact right colour of thread in my stash for this project!  ☺

Okay, now for that top part of the insert that's too big.

I wanted a pleat on the outside once I was finished.

So I did a bit of a fold like you see below and pinned it into place.
I checked the "right" side and it looked okay.

So I sewed it into place, and I zig zagged the top part so it wouldn't fray.

This is what the "wrong" side looks like.
(the inside of the blouse)

And this is was the "right" side looks like.
(the outside of the blouse)

So then I pressed the pleat the way I wanted it.
This shows the pleat open.

And here you can see the pleats in the finished blouse.
You can see we kept the trefoil tab too.

Now our Guider is all set and will be comfy in her uniform.
